The Gharial is the 2nd largest reptile in the world, after the Saltwater Crocodile. Unlike the Saltwater Crocodile, the Gharial is not a man-eater. Its jaws are too thin to handle a large struggling animal. The Gharial is an endangered species due to overhunting. It is now against the law to kill a Gharial, but Gharials have recently kept on dying. These deaths happened in the Chambal River. More than 100 Gharials died because of this mysterious killer. Tests done on the carcasses revealed the Gharial deaths were due to toxic metals in the water. Now, there are only 400 breeding pairs left.
